Toy Camera Photography? Sure, why not.

black-bird-fly
I was reading an article from yesterday’s Taipei Times (in English ;) the other day, and came across an interesting article about the recent popularity of toy camera photography.  Read the whole article (.pdf) here.  It was a refreshing change from reading about the latest multi-megapixel monsters from Nikon, Canon, and Mamiya.  The Blackbird Fly (pictured) is available for a little over $100 US and is available from B&H here, or Adorama here, as well as other online retailers.

Histograms 101

Although the histogram is one of the most useful tools on modern DSLRs, it is also one of the least understood. The histogram is a bar graph that displays the the distribution of light, dark and color tonal values inside a digital image. These tonal values are also referred to as a camera’s dynamic range.
The histogram displays the tonal values of a digital image along the bottom)of the graph from darkest (left) to lightest (right). The vertical axis shows the amount of image data found at a specific brightness value. The colors in the histogram represent the tonal values of each color channel, while white represents the data of all three color channels overlapped.
You can use your camera histogram’s real-time information to help you adapt and shoot better pictures by learning what the graphs represent and how they can affect your final image.

Discription from site:
The AF-S DX Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G optical design allows a different look and feel to images taken with zoom lenses, and its dimensions are ideal for discrete snapshots and landscape shooting with a picture angle that approximates that of the human eye. With its rounded seven-blade diaphragm opening, out-of-focus elements appear more natural. When mounted on a DX-format SLR, the picture angle is the 35mm equivalent focal length of 50mm.

Timing is everything.

This morning, while sitting in the pediatrician’s office with my five year old son Christian, we started paging through the November 2008 issue of National Geographic.  This is significant for a number of reasons.  First of all, finding a four month old magazine in a doctor’s office is somewhat like stumbling across an original DaVinci drawing at a garage sale.  Doctor’s offices are like eddies in the space-time continuum… ‘We’ll be with you in a moment.’  actually means, ‘I hope you don’t have anything planned for the rest of the day.’ and the normal selection of reading material dates from before you ever had a reason to be in a pediatrician’s office.

So there we are, Christian and I, paging through the holy grail of all waiting-room media, when we stumbled upon this image…
